Karl Valve

Utan att ha någon riktig idé om hur det färdiga verket ska se ut börjar Karl Valve med att täcka duken och plexiskivan med lager efter lager av akrylfärg. Lasyrtunt skiftar med mer pastosa drag som ger en lätt reliefverkan åt färgen.  Färgskiktens olika nyanser bestämmer innehållet i resten av målningen. I hans verk tycks färgspelet ha fört Valves tankar till olika händelser, tillfälliga och ögonblickliga, där ebben skickat vattnet tillbaka till havet; till stränder som alltjämt fuktiga reflekterar himlens skiftningar från gryning till skymning, någon gång med solen som ett lysande klot. Och målningarna förvandlas från abstrakt färglyrik till sommarstränder, till scenrum för fåglar, men också för badande, för båtar och strandhytter; scenrum med såväl djup som anade horisontlinjer.

Having no clear idea of what the finished piece should look like, Karl Valve begins by covering the canvas and the Plexiglas sheet with layer upon layer of acrylic paint. The alternation between glaze-thin and pasty applications gives a light relief effect to the colour. The different shades of the paint layers determine the content of the rest of the painting. In his pieces, the play of colours seems to have directed Valve’s mind towards various events, temporary and instantaneous, when the ebb has sent the water back out to sea; to still damp shores reflecting the different tints of the sky as dawn turns to dusk, sometimes with the sun as a shining orb. And the paintings transform, from abstract colour poetry into summer beaches, stages for birds but also for bathers, for boats and beach huts; stages with both depth and glimpsed horizon lines.
